What a general notary visit covers

A California notary establishes a signer’s identity using satisfactory evidence permitted by California law. For an acknowledgment, the signer personally appears and acknowledges executing the document; for a jurat, the signer personally appears, takes an oath or affirmation, and signs in the notary’s presence.

Affidavits, sworn statements, consent forms, and other documents may require notarization depending on the requesting party. The requesting party or the receiving organization determines which notarial act applies to a specific document.

What to expect at a signing

The signer appears in person with the final document and must be identified through satisfactory evidence permitted by California law. No particular identification document is promised acceptable until it is reviewed for the applicable notarial act.

The signer is responsible for reading and understanding the document before signing. The notary does not draft the document and does not advise on its contents.
